[Poem] Don't Blink

2009-03-20 @ 12:33 a.m.

please
or you'll maybe (maybe) miss
something

wonderful

don't blink
please
or you'll have your eyes closed (closed tight)
when the world turns

keep your eyes wide open
buttercup
and keep your mouth --
keep your mouth shut, shut,
so you can listen

listen
for the beauty in the birdsong
the strength in the blue sky
the power of the rain
the pain that laces the whispering wind

watch
for the promise in the flower
the release of the euphoric
burst
of sunlight
from behind a cloud and
the world
you can see (you can see it if you try)
in an infant's infant eyes

don't blink
please
or you'll miss it

stand strong, stand tall, and
in the face of fear
don't laugh, but keep your chin up,
buttercup
taunt that fear
with the strength of the sky,
the power of the rain,
the world in that infant's infant eyes

seeing and hearing,
they become part of you

and this is the beginning of a new path
branching into the future

as many (many, many) possibilities
as the crooked, entertwining, reaching
branches
of a wide-spread
bare, naked
tree.
